About Marine Fisheries Academy
Marine Fisheries Academy is established by Government of the People’s
Republic of Bangladesh on 1st September, 1973 on a beautiful landscape on the southern bank of the river Karnaphully, opposite the Sadarghat, Chittagong. Its
geographical position is 220 19.0’ N latitude, 910 49.8’ E longitude, which is about 1(one) km from the city center.After liberation War of 1971 in Bangladesh,it was felt that the country lacked skilled manpower for judicious exploitation and harvesting of Marine Fisheries resources from Bay of Bengal. Thus the call for a national institution to train and educate personnel for Bangladesh maritime fisheries industries began in 1972. The year was also the beginning of a rapid technological change in the deep sea fishing, with the introduction of large and sophisticated deep sea fishing vessels. Government realized that without skilled manpower i.e. qualified officers, growth of an efficient fishing fleet would be impossible.At the view,to explore and exploit the sea resources from 200 Nautical Miles of Exclusive Economic Zone (41,000 sq. miles)., Bangladesh required to train personnel for our fisheries sector which inspired Government to establish Marine Fisheries Academy (MFA) to develop professional Human Resources. Generally, MFA recruits 48 science (H.S.C. completed) students from whole Bangladesh through various steps of admission Test like written examination, oral examination, medical fitness Test, swimming Test, eye-vision test etc. in three departments i.e. Nautical Science, Marine Engineering and Marine Fisheries Technology for the period of three years graduation. Within this period Academy build up the cadets through theoretical training, Practical training, Ancillary courses, survival swimming training, Regimental Training, Games and Sports, Medical First Aid, Religious Activities, Officer like leadership, character improvement, etc. Discipline & Code of conduct are strictly maintained in Academy period and finally the cadets pass out through parade ceremony and achieve graduation degree in their respective departments and join on various jobs in Marine Fishing Ship, Merchant Ship, Naval base, Fish Processing Plant, Coastal Hatchery etc. The passed out Marine Officers and Technologists are contributing in national economy from various sources of home and abroad.

Though the Academy goes under the
Ministry of Fisheries and livestock, the Navigators and Engineers have to
appear in various grade of Competency Examination under the Ministry of
Shipping and faces a lot of negligence, deprivation by the concern Authority.
At present, the Academy administration rolling by Bangladesh Navy including the
Principal.
Since its inception Academy is
shouldering the responsibilities of exploring and pooling the seafaring talents
of the country and training them in well planned and well organized manner as
Navigator, Engineer and Marine Fisheries Technologist. The Academy is capable
to produce sufficient trained human resources to meet the requirement of the
country’s seafarers and to spare these trained human resources for employment
in other countries as well.
This institution has a big role in shaping the knowledge of the people regarding marine habitats and resources.
